The line between sports betting and daily fantasy sports has blurred in recent years. Thus, Florida lawmakers want to define the boundaries between the two with the new Florida fantasy sports bill. Rep. Jason Shoaf proposed House Bill 679 to define sports betting and DFS.

According to interactive sports news reports, the regulatory landscape of sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS) in Florida has been entertaining in recent years. West Flagler Associates, a Florida betting provider, sued Hard Rock Bet and stopped their sports betting launch in 2021. This month, the case lingered with no resolution when the Supreme Court rejected West Flagler’s appeal.

Consequently, Hard Rock Bet reopened its sports betting app in Florida last month, although it was limited to current users starting from their 2021 debut. This new information raises serious doubts about the reliability of some games found in DFS and similar applications for fantasy sports. Prize Picks and Sleeper are two popular DFS and fantasy sports applications that let users wager on the performance of individual players with a deposit of money. Users of Sleeper can parlay at least two bets to gamble on play prop bets.

New Florida Fantasy Sports Bill

New Florida Fantasy Sports Bill to Define DFS ContestsIndeed, the Seminole Tribe of Florida is not a fan of the competition that DFS and fantasy sports applications give. The tribe has exclusive rights over sports betting in Florida because of an agreement reached with the state in 2021.

According to bookie pay per head software experts, legislators in Michigan and New York sought to ban bets ordinarily provided in non-sportsbook applications because sports betting businesses in those jurisdictions did not like it. The second launch of Hard Rock Bet occurred shortly after Shoaf’s bill became public knowledge.

The right of DFS applications to give players props is protected under the terms of the Florida DFS statute (HB679), indeed, provided that the elements are interacted with (more than one player prop is included in a bet).

A “winning outcome” and the statistical performance of “more than one individual” are two components that DFS applications must have to participate in the contests the law offers.
