Kansas coach Bill Self signed the largest college basketball contract. Also, he overtook Kentucky’s John Calipari for having the richest deal given to a college coach. Sportsbook PPH insider reports that Self’s lifetime deal is worth $53 million for the first five years.
This season, Self will earn about $11 million between his base salary, professional services, royalties, signing bonus, retention incentive, and payments delayed by the pandemic. Self gets an extra year added to the contract annually and a $5M incentive for staying the first 5 years.
The contract contains a renegotiation clause for Self following the 2025-26 season, an amendment to a similarly constructed contract Self signed in 2021. According to college basketball news reports, Calipari will earn $8.5 million from the Wildcats this year under the terms of his contract.

There are incentives in the contract that might push the value much up. If Self’s team achieves a Big 12 regular season win, a conference tournament win, and coach of the year title, he gets $100,000. He can win $50k for the second round, $150k for the semifinals, and $200k for the national title.
Last month, Self and the Jayhawks escaped significant sanctions from an FBI investigation into collegiate basketball misconduct in 2017. The new agreement comes a month after that resolution. Despite being denied entry to the 2018 Final Four, an appeals tribunal downgraded five severe offenses from Level I to Level II and the rest to Level III.
Self cannot be terminated for cause related to any current infraction matter before he signed the contract. He cannot be fired for the same facts considered by the panel.
